The “tribe” or “team” mentality *can cause blindness.
I’ve always felt the greatest humans to have around you are not the ones who are ready and willing to always say Yes (yes men), but the ones willing and Not afraid to be honest with you & disagree at times teaching you along the way. When I was in charge of hiring assistant producers, I would tell them this. It was in stark contrast to what had been going on in the work culture previous to my arrival - the place was swarming with yes men hoping to yes their way to the top of the sh*t pile. But I wanted to create a more dynamic & insight filled work place that didn’t have blinders on, that allowed anyone to speak up freely without fear of retaliation.
Long story short, I’ve known a few people in positions of power keeping themselves insulated with Yes men.
It’s odd that our culture is mutating into such an extreme & blindly devoted to the tribe mentality… and that to disagree means you become the opposition. To question becomes bad. Especially with those tribes who claim be be fans of hearing different points of view, questioning the norm - this has got to be Irony… You’d think they would be the ones ready to embrace criticisms, or try to be willing to learn along the way & admit their faults. It’s even more odd when the one they follow is fine with admitting faults.
It’s hard to take criticism or hear you’re wrong. It can be even harder to admit your wrong and apologize. I appreciate & commend those who listen, try to understand where they went wrong, apologize and are willing to move forward better for now knowing.
Being wrong is a feeling, I’d hope, most of us are familiar with. And the character defining qualities come from what we do, once we realize it.
There’s an even bigger issue plaguing society. The cultural belief that money translates to mean you’re doing something right or means you’re correct. People think because someone’s wealthy they have secrets to success which gives them the power of being right. And the wealthy believe that their money is proof they can’t be wrong. To refute money makes you right - I present exhibit A - the life of the Christ Yeshua - powerful message to radically love one another, never had any money & died broke.
