Am I being too sensitive? Am I being too judgmental of “entertainment & comedy”?
The reason I didn’t like Bob Saget’s comedy is because I felt it was basic. Anyone could have created the dirty jokes he said, it was unoriginal & totally lacking perspective. I know everyone says he was a good guy & loving - but I’m not talking about who he was as a human - I never met him, maybe he was loving. I’m strictly speaking about his career in comedy.
I tell you my perspective on him because I want to address something in Radio. And we can all agree that the more you do something - the better you (are supposed to) get at it.
I follow a lot of Radio industry people. And I recently came across a site promoting a show with personalities that have been on the air for decades. And one of the highlighted segments was about a “stalker”. There were multiple audio segments in the stalker series which probably means this bit was carried out over the course of a week or two or at least over a few days. And it came across Basic. Something that a new show, maybe trying to get clicks or attention, trying to establish themselves might resort to. It really just came across like it was trying to exploit a potential bad situation. And if it was real - it missed a opportunity to address a morbidly interesting topic.
*Spoiler Alert - at the end it took a surprise turn - the woman on air personality’s stalker had mistakingly stalked the wrong person!
Listening to parts of the bit I got this overall vibe like this was a disservice to the community. Now I understand the art of “the tease” but Click Bait titles “Somebody wants to kill our show member” are not clever. Just rewording it may have had more of an impact & showed a sense of “we’re trying to be authentic / real in our entertainment”. Not thinking our audience is vapid & careless. How about “Is show members life in danger? Or Should Show member be in fear for life?” I don’t know I only put 2 seconds of thought into those, who knows maybe that wasn’t the final title. Stalking as a topic can be morbidly fascinating. Which tackling that topic as a show would definitely draw attention. But when it’s treated as a piece of click bait, I as the audience feel that disingenuous vibe & associate it with the people trying to sell it.
It also sent some bad example vibes, like when they called & confronted the “stalker”. I’m sure there are humans out there that have experienced stalking - now again, if you as a show want to tackle this topic it can get dark, so with topics - choose wisely - and I’m not sure if you’d hear from anyone who has experienced stalking but calling & confronting the stalker had an amateur vibe to it. Does this put the victim of stalking in a weird position? Does this promote a weird potential solution to being stalked? Does it encourage anything?
Does stuff like this on radio connect with the community/audience? Or does it present a campy version of a real situation that can be addressed in a serious & entertaining & potentially comedic way. Or are we all in on the joke, and is this just an extremely over hyped examination of entertainment.
